Bandar Seri Begawan Airport

The Brunei International Airport (BWN) is the main airport connecting Brunei to the rest of the world. This particular airport was established in the 1970s, and since then it has undergone expansion, and is currently looking to implement a growth project so that the airport can accommodate up to eight million people per year. Today, this facility offers residents and travellers 13 direct destinations, and these include flights to major international flights hubs like Singapore (SIN) and Kuala Lumpur (KUL).

There is one terminal, and this is still in the process of updating, but passengers can rely on most of their basic travel needs being covered. There is one ATM, and a currency exchange, but often it is better to organise your money in advance to save on the exchange rates, find out how, by visiting Skyscanner’s advice page on how much cash to bring and how to change it over. There is also free WiFi in designated areas, such as the lounge and at some of the eateries. There is also an internet café, but this will charge you for access to the network. The dining options aren’t extensive, but you can pick up snacks, or sit down with a drink and a meal if you are hungry.

The shopping options are a little better, with several duty-free outlets that sell popular brands in cosmetics, perfumes, confectionary, and tobacco, though please be aware you will not find alcohol for sale here, as this is not legal for tender in Brunei. There is an information desk if you need help, as well as a prayer room if you need to utilise it.

Royal Brunei Airlines is the major carrier and covers most flights into Brunei, but be aware you will likely have to travel on connecting routes if you are flying from Australia. These can be with airlines like Cebu Pacific, Virgin Australia, Qantas, Malaysia Airlines, Singapore Airlines, Vietnam Airlines, and Philippine Airlines.

Travel Information

·         The airport is less than 10km from the centre of town, so the drive will only take you 15 minutes. Simply get on Jalan Kebangsaan and this road will take you right into town. Renting a car from this airport is most easily done online using Skyscanner’s search tools, and you can peruse the different options offered by the companies operating in Brunei.

·         Public buses run between the airport and the city, and these can be found at the end of the airport car park. Expect a one-way fare to cost you 2BND ($1.90). If you’d prefer a door-to-door transfer though, you can arrange a pick-up and drop-off through Skyscanner, as there are plenty of companies that operate private airport transfers.

·         Taking a taxi from Brunei International Airport is easy, as they line up just outside the terminals, and operate 24/7. Taking a taxi into town should only take 20 minutes and come to around 25BND ($24).
