El Dorado International Airport, Bogota, Colombia

El Dorado International Airport is Colombia’s biggest airport and one of Latin America’s busiest in terms of both cargo and passenger traffic. The airport is located west of Bogota’s city centre. It has two passenger terminals, the main one being El Dorado or Terminal 1, handling all international flights as well as other domestic flights. Puente Aereo or Terminal 2 is utilized only for domestic flights by Avianca. You may travel between the terminals using the airport’s shuttle bus service.

You won’t go hungry in the airport, as there are food outlets available to fill your stomachs and quench your thirst. There is also a fair number of shops for you to purchase a variety of items or just browse through while waiting for your flight. If you are willing to part with some additional money, you could also use the wireless internet connection available throughout the two terminal buildings at a per hour rate. If you are in need of cash, you can withdraw some from any of the numerous ATMs available in both terminals. There is also a bank, Banco Popular, which offers currency exchange services. The airport has a pharmacy, so visitors can purchase any medication they’ve forgotten or if they run into a medical emergency. Those travelling with babies can head to the baby room to nurse or change their baby’s nappy.

If you ever require a dry cleaner, you can find one at the airport. Additionally, local and international calls can be made using the public phones in the domestic terminal. These phones run on Colombian currency. If you are travelling on a business trip, you can make use of the faxing, copying and internet services at the VIP lounges.

Disabled travellers can expect a smooth transition around the airport as it is well equipped with ramps, modified elevators and toilets for their convenience. There are no hotels within the airport’s compound but there are several in the vicinity, the closest being the Embassy Suites by Hilton. Also nearby are the Four Points by Sheraton, Bogota Marriott and Hoteles America.

If you require assistance over any matter at the airport, there is an information desk in the central hall you can head to. In case you lose any belongings, or find someone else’s, you should contact the lost and found unit near the baggage claim area.
