Athens International Airport

Athens International Airport (ATH) is the primary aviation facility for the city of Athens, and a key hub for the whole of Greece. It offers flyers over a hundred destinations, whether it is cities in the Middle East, Africa and Europe, or its multitude of beautiful islands. Situated at a convenient distance of 33km southeast of the city centre, the airport is accessed easily via Athens’ transport links.

There are comprehensive facilities available at Athens International; you’ll find full service banks, ATMs, and foreign exchange booths, as well as good communication access, such as free WiFi throughout the airport and public telephones. In terms of shopping, you can duck into designer outlets, duty-free shops, news agencies, pharmacies and gift stores. And if you’re peckish, there are a decent variety of eateries, including sit-down restaurants, fast-food options, and snack bars.

Flying into Athens from Australia, can be booked with Emirates, American Airlines, Virgin Australia, Qantas, Air China, Qatar Airways, and Etihad Airways. You will be subject to layovers, usually in cities like Abu Dhabi (AUH), Dubai (DXB), and Hong Kong (HKG).

Travel Information

· There are well-respected car hire companies stationed in the arrivals area in the airport, and you can reserve a car when you land, or organise one in advance and online. Get on the A62, then take exit K2 and merge onto the A6/E94 towards Athens. Continue on the road for 25km, and then merge onto the A1/E75 towards Pireas, and then the exit towards Peristeri. Turn left onto Lenorman, and you will find yourself coming into Athens central.

· The Metro connects the airport and the city, and is a convenient and quick way into the city. The train journey should take about 45 minutes to get into the city, and will cost 8EUR ($11) for a one-way ticket.

· There are express bus services into the city too, and you’ll find these are cheaper, but slower. An average journey taking an hour, and costs 5EUR ($7). But you can also book private airport transfers if you are with family, or travelling with others.

· Taxis are the most expensive way into the city, but one of the most convenient options if you are in a hurry. Roughly taking between 40 minutes and an hour, this journey can cost around 35-40EUR ($51-58).

Driving hide 

Passengers planning to go to the Athens International Airport by car can use the Attiki Odos toll highway from the centre and northern Athens, Varis-Koropiou Avenue from the western part, Laurio Avenue from the South, and Spata-Loutsa Avenue from the East.

Trains hide 

Passengers taking the train can use the rail station immediately adjacent to the airport terminal which is accessible by an elevated walkway. The said station is served by both the Athens Metro and suburban rail service Proastiakos and is also connected with line 3 of the Athens Metro. It connects to the Athens Central Railway Station (Larissis Station) and the port of Piraeus as well as to Corinth via Proastiakos.

Buses hide 

Passengers taking the bus can use four bus lines (X93, X95, X96, X97) that connects directly to the Athens greater area, the intercity bus stations (KTEL Kifissos Bus Terminal and Lionson bus terminal) and Piraeus. The buses disembark passengers at the departures level and depart from the arrivals level between exits 4 and 5. Other options also include the regional bus services by KTEL Express. These buses operate to the airport, currently connecting the airport to Rafina, Markopoulo, Lavrio, Kalyvia, and Keratea. Passengers taking the KTEL Express buses disembark at the departures level, and depart from the arrivals level between exits 2 and 3.

Taxi hide 

Taxis are available at the exit 3 of the taxi waiting area. Passengers can request for limousine services at the inner curb side of the arrivals level in between exit 3 and 4.
